In My Kitchen – June 2015

In my kitchen this month is success!  Last month I was having an anxiety attack trying to learn Photoshop to make the table numbers for the wedding reception using old photos of Niki and Tim with their ages corresponding to the table number.  A few days after buying some books and just starting to get the hang of things,  Apple decided to change their photo application and I lost access to all of the photos I had scanned.  I’m lucky that we now have an Apple store nearby and was able to get an appointment with a tech who did something to change back where my photos were being stored and finally got access again.  The results may not be perfect and need to be fine tuned, but they’re good enough to get by while I move on to other wedding projects.

And for my next project … making mercury glass vases.  The reception tables will have tablescapes with a variety of candles, flowers, and greenery and Niki was looking for that speckled, vintage look of gold mercury glass with a touch of silver peeking through.  After looking online for these and seeing the prices from $25 to $200 per vase, my daughter and I decided that we could turn this into a do it your/myself project.  I rummaged around in my supply of plain glass vases, bought some Krylon gold metallic and Looking Glass silver spray paint, found online instructions and waited for the temperature to warm up enough to spray outside – boy, this stuff is toxic and a face mask is highly recommended.

Viola!  mercury glass vases for about $1.00 a piece.

I also snuck in another birthday in May and my lovely daughter got me some of the cutest things.  Little tiny bud vases (no, not mercury glass – got enough of those now thank you very much).  All we need is a few days of sunshine and warm temperatures and I should have some new blooms to put in them.  Alas, right now we’re between blooms and a few days of heavy rain have stalled things.bud vasesShe also found these very cute measuring prep bowls.  What I love about them is that they’re the 1 cup, 1/2 cup, 1/3 cup, and 1/4 cup size but also have a little pouring spout.  I love having prep bowls with everything measured out – fewer mistakes when I’m CWD (Cooking While Distracted).

Finally, when I was out shopping for my daughter’s Caphalon pots and pans (Crate & Barrel had a fantastic 40% off sale), I decided that I really needed one for myself.  The price was too good to pass up and I don’t have any like this with the ridges.

What’s happening in your kitchen this month?  As always, thanks go to Celia who graciously hosts the IMK every month for us.  Please stop by to say Hi to her at Fig Jam and Lime Cordial.  Take a stroll through the other posters kitchens and make some new friends.

    • Thanks Mandy. So far everything seems to be falling into place with the wedding plans. It seemed like the wedding was so far away but when I realized that I have to get the invitations out in a week it really hit home as to how close we are. I’m so excited for them.
Niki always seems to find the cutest gifts for me & I always love them.

    • Glenda I had a wonderful birthday! We went out to a new restaurant near where my daughter lives that was sooo good! They had the best appetizers & the food was amazing – much of what they serve is grown on their own rooftop garden.
I figure we’ve only got the one child so this is our only wedding – why not go all out & have fun right? Can you believe this place specifically says that no dogs are allowed? I guess thinking about what Lola could do at a wedding it’s probably a good idea.

  2. Hey, I know we haven’t connected, but WOW, you are really doing a fabulous job on on the prep for this amazing day. The idea of the photos per age is brilliant. Just beautiful. AND…Happy Birthday!!!

    • Well hi there Judy – where you been? I can’t say that the wedding ideas are mine – all credit goes to Niki including the idea for the photos by age. My job is just to get my project list done. I can’t say the Photoshop project was a lot of fun – Photoshop is a way far beyond me so I did the best I could.
I had a blast doing the mercury glass vases though. I guess that’s more up my alley and it’s really not hard to do at all.
Thanks for the birthday happy…sigh…time marches on & I really and truly am an official senior citizen now I guess (not that I act it).

      • Well, I guess Niki is putting her degree to more use than just work. They are great.. especially those photos. Never act like it.. EVAH!!!! That’s what keeps us young. Good for you tackling Photoshop. I’ve been intimidated so far.

  3. My person loves all the creative things you’re doing for the wedding, but I have to answer that last question. Not enough is going on in my kitchen. I’m waiting for some tasty treats.

    • Ah Bongo, you & Lola are probably just starving to death. It’s been a lot of take out food & restaurants for us here lately.
So far Lola hasn’t been all that impressed by the wedding stuff going on. It’s been cutting into her Lola time.

  4. You did an amazing job with those vases, they turned out just beautiful. I am going to keep my eye out for some of those little pre measured measuring cups with a spout.. I can see how useful they would be during a CWD session!

    • I had a great time doing the vases & it was really an easy project (once I removed the cat from the spray box!). As for those little measuring cups I think she got them at Francescas (I’m almost always CWD) which might have something to do with stepping over a very large dog while also making sure she doesn’t grab our dinner from the counter.

  5. Diane, your creative ideas and do it “myself” projects 😉 will make the wedding all the more memorable and special. Enjoy every minute of the process (even the frustrating ones) because that reception will go by in the blink of an eye — but it will be beautiful and seamless because of your planning and hard work! I love those lil’ prep bowls and your term “CWD.” 🙂

    • Thank you so much Kim. My daughter is very sentimental & really loves the personal, Mom touch with these things. I made her garter with satin and lace from my mother’s wedding gown.
You’re right about the wedding day flying by. I hardly remember mine. It’s funny after all the months of planning how fast it goes.

  6. Hi from another Massachusetts blogger. I particularly like those measuring cups – much better than my utilitarian plastic ones. Looks like the upcoming wedding will be beautiful with all the attention and care you are paying to the details.

    • Yeah – another Massachusetts blogger! Thank you for stopping by. I’m going to take a run over to your site. I do have 2 sets of those plastic utilitarian plastic measuring cups which I think were a free giveaway at CVS years ago. They’re so old that I can hardly read the red marking lines.

  7. I read that you had a high temperature of only 49 degrees one day last week….what’s up with that??? Don’t they know you have things to do to get ready for this event?? Like not inhale toxic fumes indoors?!?!?!

    Like

    • Oh sun you heard correctly! But we didn’t just have ONE day of 49 degrees, we had a string of them followed by rain & that awful chill your bones raw weather. Yes, I am going to admit – I TURNED THE HEAT ON IN MAY. I’m one of those people who goes by how I feel, not the calendar when it comes to comfort.

  8. Diane this wedding is going to be amazing. Good on you for learning photoshop. I have given up on learning photoshop, will just send you my food photos to do your magic… LOL When is the big day? Loving those cute little measuring cups not just for measuring but great for serving sauces. Hope your weekend is super.

    • Oh my friend, thank you – you always say the kindest things. I’m really getting excited about the big day which is Aug 14th. My daughter really wanted it as close to our anniversary as possible – we were married Aug. 12th.
Grrr- Photoshop!!! I don’t think you need Photoshop for your food photos – they’re about as professional as I’ve seen (and certainly of a caliber that is well above mine, that’s for sure).
Aren’t those little cups great? Yes, I do love the little spout for pouring.

    • Celia, you would not believe how easy (and fun) it was to do the mercury vases. What a ton of money we saved doing it, especially since I had so many plain old clear glass vases just hanging around. We also have The Dollar Store here where everything, including decent sized glass vases are $1.00. You can’t beat that.

Thanks for the birthday wishes -seems like we’ve had a few of those in our blogging crowd lately.

  9. I loved reading about your creative ideas – and the vases are gorgeous. Recently I found info. about how to spray the outside of glass vases to get a ‘new look’!! I haven’t tried it yet. I love what you did with the photos!! I bet you could NOT believe Apple changed their program – you had a good idea to go directly to the Apple store!! When is the wedding? Can’t wait to see the photos from that event !! ; o )

    • Thanks Cecile. I’ll bet you will have fun doing the vases. It’s amazing what you can do with these paints now. I was not at all happy with Apple and even less pleased when I went to the store and the 1st person I spoke to tried to tell me that Apple hadn’t changed anything. Then when she turned me over to the techie she said “oh she’s having a problem with that new photos update”! What? You just tried to tell me there wasn’t a change and you knew all along? Did not like that.

The wedding is August 14th…2 more months.
